Deeper Learning & the 5Cs
Purpose: The Profile of a Virginia Graduate describes the knowledge, skills, experiences and attributes that students must attain to be successful in life. Virginia's 21st Century school reforms centers upon the 5Cs of Learning: communication, creativity, critical thinking, collaboration and creation. The purpose of the project was to connect mathematical concepts to real life, as well as utilizing the 5Cs. My design focuses on developing flexible thinkers who can draw from a variety of experiences and ideas when solving problems. Learners achieve this through collaborative activities that heavily rely on critical thinking, reasoning and justifying solutions. I believe that by setting up positive norms in the learning space all participants will feel encouraged to ask questions, take risks and value mistakes as part of their learning process. My goal is to harness the uniqueness and inventiveness of diverse learners by providing authentic, challenging, equitable and inclusive practices.
Process: Students first learned about different geometric transformations in math class (translation, dilation, reflection). As a culminating assessment of their mathematical understanding they had to complete the Transformations @BAM project.
